Climbing Mountains to Reach a Shared Goal: The Alzheimer Society of B.C. Gears Up for Annual Ascent of Kilimanjaro

01---Kilimanjaro For those who say there is simply not a good fit for them in fundraising or volunteer work, let’s all refect that every one of us has a skill, gift or trait that would greatly benefit a cause or another individual, directly or indirectly.  Such work can present unique challenges that aren’t generally met in day-to-day life, going far beyond dealing with those pesky staplers at the office that never work.  Working for a cause, without pay, solely for the benefit of something in which we believe, can be one of the most rewarding experiences of a lifetime.  Climbing a mountain in Tanzania in order to raise funds for Alzheimer’s education and research can take you above the clouds and change your perspective forever.  Let’s talk about that.

18---The-Roof-of-Africa Since Ascent for Alzheimer’s began in 1998, more than 130 Canadians have climbed mountains in order to raise funds to fight Alzheimer’s disease.  Climbers trek for various reasons— many have family members stricken with the disease, others are engaged by the personal challenge,  some are enrolled by friends – each uniquely personal and all equally committed. Theirs is a committment of time, energy, money to support their own experience and the drive to raise at leastt $10,000.00 per person in donations to support this worthy cause. All participants must pay their own expenses for the trip, including travel expenses, a fact that emphasizes that the money raised goes directly to support the Alzheimer Society of B.C. for research. To date, Ascent has raised more than $2 million.

02---Visiting-children-in-the-village-of-Marangu The Ascent takes place in September each year, under the direction of experienced guides who lead each team. Teams usually have about 10 members who have been working toward this achievement for more than a year.  While this year’s teams are reviewing their packing lists, next year’s teams are already being formed.  Planning and strategy includes training and conditioning as well as networking and fundraising – from employers, colleaues and friend as well as through events and community connections.  There is something magical that happens as people get involved, and support often comes because of the passion and courage it takes to get involved.

More than 90% of Ascent trekkers reach the summit of Kilimanjaro, an impressive figure when compared with other groups.  This may be attributed to the slower pace of the group (following a 7-day climbing route which provides for much better acclimatization than does the typical 4-day trek).  Alzheimer Society of B.C. has launched a Web site at www.ascentbc.ca for those of you who would like to follow this year’s trek, which takes place in September.  The site includes pics and bios of each of the participants as well as a chance for you to sponsor each of these brave souls!  biOasis is a proud sponsor of Ascent for Alzheimer’s.
